A person’s hair is usually one of their more prominent characteristics and many take great pride in each strand. This is why thinning hair is of major concern for both men and women around the world. Today, we will address the causes of thinning hair and the forms of treatment that are available.
The Cause(s) of Thinning Hair
Before being able to treat thinning hair, it’s important to at least have an idea of what is causing thinning hair. In general, thinning hair may be caused by lifestyle habits, genetics, or both. This includes:
High-Stress Lifestyle
Stress is known to be detrimental to health. The same is true when it comes to hair. This is mostly due to the hormone that is released while stressed and the overall lifestyle that goes hand in hand with such stress. Example: Lack of sleep, unbalanced diet, etc. This may even lead to a scalp condition such as Telogen Effluvium, which is a cause of alopecia.
Rapid Weight Loss
Weight loss is often a component of a high-stress lifestyle. While losing weight for the sake of one’s health is recommended, losing weight too quickly can deprive the body of essential nutrients. In turn, the loss of hair may begin to occur, along with other negative consequences.
Medical Conditions/Treatments
Some medical conditions and/or treatments for medical conditions may cause hair to thin. For example, having a Vitamin D or autoimmune deficiency. Or, a disorder/infection that affects hair such as Trichotillomania (TTM).
Also known as hair pulling or tric, TTM causes an individual to have body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB). In many cases, one area of hair is affected more than others, although it may also be widespread and therefore affect the majority of the scalp.
Most recently, COVID-19 has been known to create thinner hair and even cause hair loss. However, some general illnesses also have the same effect on a person’s hair. And, there is a general correlation between fevers and hair loss. Overall, it is always recommended to speak to your primary physician about any questions and concerns you may have.
While part of their job is to make you aware of possible symptoms and side effects, everyone reacts to treatments differently. It is better to keep your healthcare provider in the know of everything you experience to ensure the best treatment course is followed.
Tight Hairstyles/Updos
It’s natural to not want hair on your face or in your eyes throughout the day. Unfortunately, hair ties may pull out and/or break hair- both of which, contribute to hair thinning.
If the hair is repeatedly kept in an updo with the hair elastic resting in the same spot on the head, then the same area of hair is constantly being damaged. Be mindful of how tightly hair ties are fastened and try to not wear such hairstyles on a daily basis.
Hair should also be dry whenever it is braided or in a ponytail. Putting hair in such styles while wet makes it even more prone to breakage.
Using Too Many Hair Treatments
While hair treatments are wonderful for self-expression, overtreating hair with dyes, relaxers or perms can wreak havoc on the health of hair. With time, hair follicles will weaken and eventually break completely. It is important to always consult a professional and to use the proper products in order to minimize damage.
Poor Diet
If you are in poor physical health, odds are, your hair’s health also isn’t doing too well. Just like our bodies, our hair needs proper nutrients (vitamins and minerals) in order to grow and stay healthy.
Consider seeking advice from a nutritionist if you feel that your diet is lacking in certain areas. Not only with this help your hair to become full and lustrous, but your entire body will feel a difference. From sleeping better and possibly losing weight, to growing long and strong hair and nails, it’s important to work on your body from the inside out.
Stopping Birth Control or Giving Birth
Neglecting or choosing to not take birth control can have an affect on women’s hair; sometimes, this includes hair thinning. This is usually due to all of the hormonal changes occurring during this time in a woman’s cycle.
It seems as though almost every stage of pregnancy including post pregnancy has its own unique affect on hair. For example, it isn’t uncommon for pregnant women to have their hair texture change. It also isn’t odd for new mothers to have thinning hair as postpartum hair loss is quite a common ocurrence. Once again, this is an important discussion to have with your doctor/OB-GYN.
Treatments
We have discussed how it is important to be healthy on the inside and how this health will begin to show in the state of hair. Sometimes, a little bit of extra help is needed. For example, perhaps having a proper diet is proving to be difficult. It will take time to figure out which foods will help your body and your hair!
Therefore, if a little bit of extra help is needed, perhaps a multivitamin would be of aid. Or, if you want to focus solely on the hair, there are supplements specifically for hair health. It is advised to seek proper professional advice from a doctor and a hair professional.
Perhaps ask them about a few treatments that you can begin from the comfort of your own home. Or, if they recommend a vitamin or supplement to help fill in any gaps that your diet is missing (Biotin, etc). At the same time, your doctor and offer advice when it comes to treatments that may help to heal the hair, thus creating fuller and thicker-looking hair.
