How to Prevent Colour Fading

How to Prevent Colour Fading

If you’ve recently coloured your hair, it’s important to take preventative steps in order to protect it.  This will ensure that the colour will remain vibrant for as long as possible. Here are some tips to protect your coloured hair and maintain its vibrancy for longer.

Resist the Urge to Immediately Wash Hair

After colouring your hair, it’s best to wait for at least 48 to 72 hours before washing it. This will give the colour time to set and help to prevent fading.

Choose Your Shampoo Wisely

Use only sulfate-free & colour-safe shampoo and conditioner. Regular shampoos and conditioners can strip the colour from your hair.  Therefore, it’s important to use products that are specifically formulated for coloured hair. Look for products that are labelled “colour-safe”.  These products are designed to be gentler on hair while also helping preserve the colour.

Use Lukewarm Water

Hot water can open up the hair cuticle, which can cause the colour to fade faster. To help preserve the colour, using lukewarm water is recommended.

Avoid Over-Washing Hair

Over-washing coloured hair can cause the colour to fade more quickly. It can also cause damage to the hair itself.  Here are four reasons why you should avoid over-washing coloured hair:

Strips Natural Oils

Washing your hair too frequently can strip your hair of its natural oils, which can cause your scalp to produce more oil to compensate. This may lead to greasy, oily hair, which is not ideal when you’re trying to preserve your hair colour.

Dries Out Hair

Frequently washing your tresses can also dry out your hair, which can cause it to become brittle and prone to breakage. This is especially true if you’re using hot water or harsh shampoos.

Causes Colour to Fade

Washing your hair too often may cause the colour to fade more quickly. This is because the pigments that are used in hair dyes can wash out of the hair over time. Again, this is more likely to occur if you’re using harsh shampoos or hot water.

Damages the Hair Cuticle

The cuticle is the outer layer of your hair, and over-washing can cause it to become damaged. This can make your hair more prone to breakage leading to dryness, frizziness, and lack of shine.

Don’t Skip the Conditioner!

Coloured hair should not skip the step of conditioning hair. It is an important step can help to protect the hair from damage and keep the colour looking vibrant. Here are some reasons why conditioner is important for coloured hair:

Restores Moisture

Coloured hair can become dry and damaged due to the colouring process. Conditioner helps to restore moisture to the hair. This can prevent breakage and make the hair more manageable.

Protects Hair Cuticle

Conditioner helps to smooth the hair cuticle, which is the outer layer of the hair. This can help to protect the hair from damage and prevent colour fading.

Enhances Colour

Some conditioners are specifically formulated for coloured hair. They contain ingredients that can enhance the colour to make it look more vibrant.

Reduces Tangling

Coloured hair can be more prone to tangling due to the damage caused by the colouring process. Conditioner helps reduce tangling and makes the hair easier to comb through.

Overall, conditioner is an important part of any hair care routine, but it is especially important for coloured hair. It can help to protect the hair from damage, keep it moisturized, and enhance the colour. In the end, hair is left looking vibrant and healthy. If you have coloured hair, be sure to use a conditioner that is specifically formulated for coloured hair to help protect and preserve your colour.

Limit Heated Styling

Heated styling tools like flat irons, curling irons, and hair dryers can damage your hair and cause the colour to fade. If you do use heat styling tools, try to keep the heat on the lowest setting and always use a heat protectant spray.

Protect Hair From The Sun & UV Rays

UV rays can cause damage to the hair cuticle (the outer layer of your hair). When the cuticle is damaged, it can’t hold onto colour molecules as effectively, which can cause hair colour to fade quicker. UV rays can also break down the chemical bonds in hair colour, causing it to lighten or change colour altogether.

It is important to protect your hair from the sun by using a hair product with UV protection like OSKA PURE Leave-in Primer – Heat & UV Protectant. Especially, if you have coloured hair.  With OSKA PURE Colour Preserving Shampoo & Conditioner, you can also make sure your hair colour stays as fresh as the day you left the salon.

Deep Condition Regularly

Coloured hair can be more prone to dryness and damage, so it’s important to keep it moisturized. Use a deep conditioning mask once a week or as needed to help keep your hair hydrated and healthy. OSKA PURE Deep Conditioning Mask delivers intense hydration, incredible smoothness, and immediate anti-frizz action.

Use Leave-In Conditioner

Coloured hair can become dry and brittle, so it’s important to keep it moisturized. Use a leave-in conditioner to help hydrate and protect your hair.

Get Regular Trims

Regular trims can help to keep your hair looking healthy and prevent split ends, which can make coloured hair look dull and lifeless. Aim to get a trim every 3-4 months.

By following these tips, hair will hold colour longer and color fading will be a worry of the past.  OSKA PURE is also thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of even more products to help you protect your coloured hair!  This includes the OSKA PURE Leave-In Primer- Heat & UV Protectant  and the OSKA PURE Deep Conditioning Mask.  Stay tuned for more news about their upcoming release!  In the meantime, be sure to sign up for our newsletter so you can be the first to know all about OSKA PURE’s exciting news and product launches.
