Protecting Hair from Heat: Tips and Products

According to Allure, the top hair care trends of 2023 revolve around repairing hair.  Is this a surprise?  To be honest, not really.  It’s no secret that we use styling tools to make the most of our hair.  With thanks to hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners, we can go from pin-straight hair to a head full of curls quickly and easily.  However, these tools can also lead to hair damage.  Today at OSKA PURE, we will dive into how to protect hair from heat.

Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

The first step of protecting the hair from heat actually begins with choosing the right products you use to wash your hair!  We highly recommend using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. It is also recommended that these products are paraben-free and/or sulfate-free.  (Parabens and sulfates strip hair of the natural oils which help to hydrate the hair).

If you already have hair that is a bit on the oily side, don’t be afraid of hydration!  Be sure to only apply the products on the ends of the hair.  Doing so will ensure that the drier parts of the hair will get the hydration they need. All the while, without adding moisture to the portions that are in no need of extra attention.

Deep Conditioner

Using a deep conditioner once or twice a week is another way to not only nourish the hair but also protect hair.  As their name suggests, deep conditioners go deeper into the hair than regular conditioners do.

For this reason, they shouldn’t be used every day like regular conditioners. And, they should only be applied to hair about 2 to 4 times a month.  Once a week or once every two weeks (depending on the condition of the hair) is optimal.

When using a deep conditioner, always shampoo your hair first. Then, work the deep conditioner into the ends of the hair and massage it up and into your scalp.  While this sounds like an amazing product to incorporate into your hair routine (and it is) be mindful of how you use it and how much you use.

Try to not put a handful of the product into your hair.

This may result in greasy strands and hair that is weighed down. Instead, put a maximum of a quarter-sized dollop of deep conditioner in the palm of your hands. Rub them together, and then apply the product evenly to the hair.  Allow it to be absorbed into the hair for about 10-20 minutes.

A popular “tip”  that should not be followed, is to keep the deep conditioner in your hair overnight.  It has been said that only rinsing it out in the morning allows the product to really soak into the hair follicles.  There is no need to do this.

In fact, too much moisture for a prolonged period of time can cause hygral fatigue. Hydral fatigue is another form of hair follicle damage (this should be avoided!).  This is especially true if you have extra porous hair.  With this being said, be sure to follow the instructions for each unique product you use!

Hydrating Hair Mask

If hot styling tools are used, it is advised to replenish the hair with moisture! Using such tools only takes moisture away.  Hydrating hair masks can soften hair while adding shine.  Depending on the hair mask, it may help protect the hair from damage caused by environmental factors, too.

While using a hair mask every day is not advised, a couple of times a week (if necessary) won’t hurt.  Again, this depends on each person’s hair health and hair type. A hydrating hair mask will be incredibly beneficial for those who use heat tools. The same applies to hair that is often styled with a curling iron and/or hair straightener.

Heat Protectant Styling Products

We have covered products to use during the process of cleaning the hair. Now, it’s time to discuss how to protect the hair during styling. Do you love to hot iron your hair until it’s pin-straight? Are you known for curling your hair? If using a curling iron or a straightener makes your confidence skyrocket, we are all for it! However, it is important to protect the hair from the heat!

By using the proper shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask, we have already started to protect the hair.  However, to add another level of protection, the use of heat-protectant styling products is advised.

OSKA PURE’s Styling Cream with Anti-Frizz and Anti-Breakage Properties not only protects hair from heat. It also protects the hair from UV radiation, leaving hair smooth and incredibly soft.  Regardless of whether you’re using heat to style straight or curly hair, this vegan cream acts as a shield. Hair will be protected from the harmful effects of hot tools.  It’s the perfect non-toxic addition to any styling routine!
